Working memory – Fluency depends on having adequate working memory capacity in that language. To speak Spanish fluently you need to train your working memory to be able to handle longer strings of Spanish sounds.
Speech Segmentation – Does full speed spoken Spanish just sound like a wall of sound to you? Are you able to make out the individual words or does it just sound like noise? In normal speech there are no gaps between words – they all blend together. Your brain needs to learn to divide the speech it hears into individual words so it can make sense of them – and this skill must be learnt.
Pattern recognition – Pattern recognition is the basis of grammatical analysis by the subconscious mind. Native speakers’ brains don’t handle grammar as “rules” but rather as patterns.
